The word hero is etymologically related to heresy and heretic. All three are derived from the Greek hairétikos, meaning ‘able to choose.’ A hero chooses the questions of his or her life, and thereby his or her quest. For all of us, the question is the ‘quest—I—on.’ In other words, the questions we ask or fail to ask shape the journeys of our lives.
